Sound and
Consciousness
Many cultures
around the world have used sound and music as a way to alter consciousness.
When certain external sounds or rhythms are heard, the brain waves will try to
match those frequencies which results in a change of perception. Brain waves
are generally divided into 5 different categories of consciousness.
High Beta 23-33Hz: Linked to
hyperactivity, anxiety and stress.
Beta 14-20Hz: Normal waking
consciousness. Associated with daily activities and strong emotions.
Alpha 8-13Hz: Day dreaming/
Light meditation. Associated with heightened awareness, psychic activity, and
calm.
Theta 4-7Hz: Deep
meditation/ Light sleep. Associated with peak creativity, high psychic
activity, visions and dreaming.
Delta - 0.5-3Hz: Deep sleep/
Unconsciousness. Increased healing and regeneration.
Beating on a drum with a rhythm of around 64 beats per
minute will change our brain wave pattern from Beta to Alpha. Beating a faster
rhythm will put us into Alpha and Theta brain wave states. Other sounds that
change our brain waves to Alpha and Theta include the sounds of rattles,
waterfalls, rivers, rain, cricket chirping, white noise, jingle bells,
didgeridoos, and even the wind in the trees. All that is generally needed is a
continuous high frequency sound or rhythm that the mind can focus on.
Repetitious chanting
or toning will give similar effects, which is why it is often used in ritual.
When one reaches these deeper states of consciousness (Alpha/Theta/Delta)
the subconscious becomes more active and the mind is more suggestible. This
causes mantras and chants to enter directly into our subconscious and have
more staying power in the long-term.

Giving
A Sound Healing Treatment
1.
Give the patient an overview of what you will be doing. They
will lie down, and you will work close to their body projecting sounds into
their body to create balanced energy. Be sure to let them know that they can
tell you to stop the treatment if it is too uncomfortable for them.
2.
Have the patient lie down on their back with a pillow for
their head and a pillow under their knees. Make sure they
are comfortable. It is best if they are wearing light clothing, because heavy
clothing will absorb and muffle some of the sound.
3.
Ground yourself, centre yourself, and set your intent. Become
aware of the ground beneath you, and focus your mind into the present moment.
Then set your intent by praying or using an affirmation of healing. Sacred
sound will flow through me for ..(the persons name).. highest good. So be
it. Amen.
4.
Scan the body of the patient using a simple vowel sound. Tone
the vowel sound over the body and take note of any places where the sound
waves or cracks, differences in temperature, or places that your intuition
draws you to. These will be places that may require extra sound healing attention.
5.
Tone over the body with healing sounds. Begin
by intuitively choosing a tone that you feel the person needs. Change the
tone as you feel necessary, and spend extra time on places that may need more
sound than others. Dont tone too loudly around the ears. Always end at the
feet with a deeper OO sound to ground them.
6.
Feedback. Ask the patient for feedback
of what they felt and experienced.
7.
Give them a hug. Hugs make you
healthier and theyre a great way to end any kind of healing treatment.
